Autofocus: 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan R Line Unveiled

Kai Grünitz, the Brand Board Member overseeing Technical Development, delves into the notable progressions in the third iteration of the Volkswagen Tiguan, grounded on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB evo). This forward-thinking platform facilitates the widespread integration of state-of-the-art technologies, particularly the novel hybrid drivetrains that boast an electric range of approximately 100 kilometers, broadening accessibility across diverse demographics.

The technological strides of the Tiguan span various dimensions. The incorporation of hybrid drivetrains, showcasing an impressive all-electric range of approximately 100 kilometers, markedly enhances the SUV’s overall efficiency. Additionally, all eHybrid models now enjoy expedited AC charging, complemented by the introduction of standard fast DC charging for the first time. The MIB4-based Digital Cockpit serves as a comprehensive information hub, seamlessly amalgamating digital services and applications within a user-friendly interface. The inclusion of features such as pneumatic massage functionality for front seats and the IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights further enhances the Tiguan’s premium offerings. Moreover, the adaptive chassis control DCC Pro contributes to heightened comfort and dynamic driving experiences, while the latest iteration of Park Assist simplifies and optimizes parking maneuvers.

The Tiguan’s captivating design and enhanced aerodynamics significantly contribute to its overall allure. The front end features striking flat LED headlights and a glass-covered horizontal strip, complemented by air curtains on the outer sides of the bumper to optimize airflow. These design refinements have successfully reduced the drag coefficient from 0.33 to 0.28, underscoring the vehicle’s efficiency. The athletic shoulders over the wheel housings, capable of accommodating up to 20-inch wheels, further amplify the Tiguan’s visual presence. The rear end is distinguished by a novel horizontal LED strip, adding to its distinctive aesthetic.

Within the Tiguan, a complete redesign emphasizes premium materials and meticulous craftsmanship. The intuitive cockpit landscape seamlessly integrates various modules, including the Digital Cockpit featuring anti-reflective coated digital instruments in a tablet landscape format, a generously sized infotainment screen of up to 38 centimeters (15 inches) with a revamped menu structure and graphics, a head-up display projecting onto the windscreen, and a multifunctional driving experience switch equipped with an integrated OLED display. The newly introduced IDA voice assistant facilitates natural language interaction, simplifying the adjustment of various vehicle and infotainment functions.

The Tiguan offers a versatile range of efficient drivetrains, thanks to the flexibility of the MQB evo platform. Options encompass turbo diesel engines (TDI), turbo gasoline engines (TSI), mild hybrid turbo gasoline engines (eTSI), and plug-in hybrid systems (eHybrid), with the latter exclusively available with automatic transmission (DSG). Simplifying the gear selection process, a steering column switch enhances convenience, while paddle shifters behind the steering wheel provide added control.

The MQB evo platform also introduces electronically controlled running gear, featuring options like the DCC Pro and a Vehicle Dynamics Manager. These systems optimize vehicle stability and agility during dynamic cornering, contributing to an overall enhanced performance.

Ensuring comfort during extended journeys, the Tiguan boasts ergoActive Plus seats with pneumatic four-way lumbar adjustment and a 10-chamber pressure massage function. Additionally, the IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights make their debut, providing superior illumination for improved safety and comfort on the road.

The Tiguan incorporates a comprehensive array of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, including Side Assist, Front Assist, Lane Assist, Rear View camera, and Dynamic Road Sign Display. Optional features, such as Park Assist Pro with remote parking capability and Trailer Assist for assisted trailer maneuvering, further enhance convenience.

Despite a modest increase in length, the Tiguan features a more capacious luggage compartment, expanding by 37 liters to a total of 652 liters when loaded up to the height of the rear seat backrests. This reflects the efficient utilization of space in this new generation SUV.
