In the year 2021, the INFINITI Q50 sports sedan underwent notable enhancements, introducing a fresh grade-level designation and refining both standard and optional package offerings. The 2021 Infiniti Q50 lineup expanded to encompass four distinct grade levels, including the previously available PURE, LUXE, and RED SPORT 400, now joined by the newly introduced SENSORY.

Moreover, the optional equipment package content underwent a revision, with the former ProASSIST Package content now becoming a standard feature starting from the LUXE grade. Notably, navigation is now a standard inclusion in the SENSORY and RED SPORT 400 models for the 2021 model year, while a novel Seat and sound Package has been introduced for the LUXE grade.

Adding to the advancements, the 2021 model year incorporated standard Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, and the LUXE grade saw the integration of various driver assistance features. These include the Intelligent Around View® Monitor with Moving Object Detection and a haptic steering wheel (exclusive to vehicles equipped with Lane Departure Warning). Furthermore, SENSORY and RED SPORT 400 grades now come equipped with standard power folding outside mirrors.

Introducing a touch of aesthetics, a new exterior color, Slate Gray, found its place on the Q50 color chart. Additionally, the RED SPORT 400 model boasts new Black Matte Carbon Fiber interior trim and black exterior trim, enhancing its visual appeal.

Under the hood, the 2021 INFINITI Q50 offers a choice between 300-horsepower and 400-horsepower rated 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engines, the latter being exclusive to the RED SPORT 400 model. All four grade levels are available in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations, providing a versatile range of options to cater to diverse driving preferences.

A choice of two exterior designs
Once again, the Q50 presents a dramatic exterior that allows for a personalized touch, offering tailored designs to suit the unique attributes and character of each model in the lineup. The SENSORY grade showcases a performance-oriented exterior design, while the top-tier RED SPORT 400 not only boasts 400 horsepower but also features exclusive interior and exterior appointments that unmistakably communicate the car’s high-performance potential.

All grades share the distinctive INFINITI double-arch grille, making a bold first impression with its three-dimensional, textural quality that intricately details the waved mesh-pattern surface and chrome surround. A commanding character line rises smoothly from the double-arch grille, flowing dynamically along the body’s side like a wave, creating a remarkably fluid profile. The signature LED headlamps, resembling a human-eye aspect, and the slim combination LED rear lamps borrowed from the Q60 sports coupe contribute to an elegant appearance with a sharp light signature.

The front of the Q50 SENSORY and RED SPORT 400 grades boasts an angular front bumper and broader, lower air intakes, enhancing visual potency compared to non-Sport models. Inspired by INFINITI’s commitment to zero-lift aerodynamic efficiency, a prominent airfoil is positioned at the base of the front bumper.

Turning attention to the rear of the SENSORY and RED SPORT 400, a focus on twin exhausts and a rear diffuser with a two-tone paint finish stands out – the body color is complemented by dark metallic trim encircling the base of the rear bumper.

RED SPORT 400 models feature unique exhaust finishers and 19-inch wheels, not only contributing to a more aggressive stance but also enhancing handling and traction during cornering and intense acceleration. The exclusive aluminum alloy wheels on RED SPORT 400 models showcase a more technical design with sharper, thinner spokes compared to those on the Q50 SENSORY.

The Q50’s lean, sturdy body sides anchor its performance-oriented stance, with a robust bone structure and an arched roofline flowing seamlessly to the trademark crescent C-pillars. At the rear, side character lines smoothly blend with the shape of the rear LED combination lights, culminating in the familiar rear double-arch trunk line for a strong and memorable rear view.

Standard features include heated outside mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, while a power sliding and tilting glass moonroof is standard on all models except the Q50 PURE. Notably, for 2021, power-folding outside mirrors are now standard on SENSORY and RED SPORT 400 grades.

The Q50 RED SPORT 400 distinguishes itself with red “S” badging, high-gloss black paint-finished mirror caps, red-painted sport brake calipers, and distinctive exhaust tips, reinforcing its performance credentials and exuding a confident, aggressive aura.

Additional exterior details encompass wide door architecture with narrow A- and B-pillar sashes, facilitating easy ingress and egress and contributing to an open cabin feel. The body design optimizes airflow over both upper and lower body portions, resulting in an impressively low coefficient of drag as low as 0.26 (varies by grade level and drive configuration). The Q50 also boasts zero front and rear lift.

The color palette introduces two new hues, Slate Gray and Grand Blue, specifically chosen to accentuate the Q50’s contours and sculpted surfaces. Six other color choices carry over from the previous year, including Midnight Black (premium color), Graphite Shadow, Black Obsidian, Dynamic Sunstone Red (exclusive color), Majestic White (premium color), and Pure White.

Finely crafted, connected cabin
Inside the 2021 Q50, an exceptional level of artistry and quality defines the high-tech cabin, creating a comfortable and connected space. Each grade level boasts its own distinct interior character, elevating the driving experience.

Craftsmanship takes center stage in the interior design, with high-quality materials enveloping the instrument panel, accentuated by double stitching. The dashboard showcases finely crafted trims, meticulously curated by INFINITI designers.

The performance-inspired ethos of the Q50 extends into the cabin, borrowing elements from the Q60 sports coupe. A leather-wrapped shift knob, adorned with double-stitched seams and chrome trim, echoes the instrument panel and features an inlaid INFINITI logo. In 2021, a haptic steering wheel is introduced for vehicles equipped with Lane Departure Warning, providing a subtle vibration in lieu of the previous audio tone.

The Q50 interior boasts INFINITI’s renowned zero-gravity spinal support seats, engineered to offer consistent support and reduce pressure on lower and upper back muscles. Front and rear seats distribute body pressure across a broader range of the upper seating surface. The spacious interior provides ample front and rear headroom, enhanced rear knee room with a thin front seatback design, and extensive front seat slide and lift adjustability.

The instrument panel follows INFINITI’s double-wave design tradition, with an asymmetrical flow from the top of the center cluster to the wide center console. Key operations and controls, including hard switches, touch panels, INFINITI Controller, and INFINITI Drive Mode Selector, are positioned for convenient access without requiring a change in driving posture.

The INFINITI InTouch™ System features dual HD displays, standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration, and two illuminated USB connection ports (one Type-A and one Type-C). InTouch™ allows occupants to personalize the interior environment and store multiple driver profiles, identified by their I-Key. The system includes SiriusXM® Travel Link (on SENSORY and RED SPORT 400) with access to weather, fuel prices, stocks, sports, and movie times (SiriusXM® subscription required, sold separately).

SENSORY and RED SPORT 400 grades are equipped with a 16-speaker Bose® Performance Series sound system, featuring advanced staging technology for a precise and rich acoustic experience. Responsive performance served in two ways
Nestled behind the distinctive double-arch grille and expansive hood of the Q50 lies a duo of potent options for the acclaimed VR-series 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine. This powerhouse is presented in two variants, offering either 300 horsepower or an impressive 400 horsepower, showcasing a meticulously crafted balance between drivability, efficiency, and performance.

The high-output iteration, a standard feature on the Q50 RED SPORT 400, boasts an impressive 400 horsepower at 6,400 rpm, marking the highest standard horsepower for any non-specialty model. Torque is equally robust at 350 lb-ft within the range of 1,600-5,200 rpm.

For the standard output version, found in the Q50 PURE, LUXE, and SENSORY models, the engine produces a commendable 300 horsepower at 6,400 rpm, accompanied by 295 lb-ft of torque within the range of 1,600-5,200 rpm.

The VR engine incorporates a range of innovative technologies to deliver an engaging driving experience, featuring a direct-injection gasoline fueling system. This high-pressure direct-injection system ensures precise fuel injection into the combustion chamber, adapting to throttle position and engine speed for smooth acceleration. Remarkably, this technology makes the VR V6 the cleanest and most fuel-efficient engine of its kind ever offered by INFINITI.

Characterized by lightweight aluminum construction and low mechanical friction, the engine provides a seamless, durable, and highly responsive performance. Notable weight-saving elements include the adoption of spray bore coating for the engine block and an integrated exhaust manifold for cylinder heads, enhancing cooling efficiency.

The integrated exhaust manifold, positioned within the cylinder head, brings the catalytic converter closer to the exhaust point, allowing for quicker heating – twice as fast as previous V6 engines. This not only improves response but also reduces emissions during cold starts, while contributing to the engine’s compact design and reduced weight.

Further enhancing power delivery is the advanced twin-turbo system, ensuring smooth and immediate responses under acceleration. An optimized turbine blade design contributes to greater overall performance, allowing for faster turbine revolution speeds and immediate response from the twin-turbo system.

The engine’s water-cooled intercooler system plays a vital role in improving performance and efficiency, reducing turbo lag and facilitating immediate acceleration. An electronic wastegate actuator enhances control over exhaust gas flow, improving overall engine efficiency.

Exclusive to the RED SPORT 400 engine, additional features include an extra water pump for enhanced cooling and an optical turbine speed sensor allowing twin-turbochargers to perform at up to 240,000 rpm – an unprecedented achievement for a V6 engine.

The Q50’s powerplant is paired with a sophisticated seven-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission featuring manual shift mode and available steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters on Q50 SPORT and RED SPORT 400 models. Dual transmission coolers are employed for effective heat dissipation.

The Adaptive Shift Control in the Q50 enhances gear selection by utilizing a lateral acceleration sensor to detect changes in the road, adapting to factors such as hills and turns. Sport Mode offers a more aggressive shift pattern, with automatic up- and down-shifting at higher rpm. Sport Mode, as well as paddle shifters, are standard on RED SPORT 400. This ensures swift, smooth shifts and optimal gear choices tailored to both the road conditions and the driver’s preferred style.

The 2021 Q50 provides flexibility with two driveline options – rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, available across all five grade levels.

Direct Adaptive Steering and Dynamic Digital Suspension
The INFINITI Q50 distinguishes itself from the competition through its advanced INFINITI Direct Adaptive Steering, a precursor to future steering systems that play a pivotal role in progressing towards fully autonomous driving.

The Direct Adaptive Steering system outpaces mechanical counterparts by swiftly transmitting the driver’s input to the wheels, requiring fewer steering corrections and executing an impressive 1,000 steering adjustments per second. This system not only enhances steering responsiveness but also intelligently communicates feedback about road surface and chassis behavior to the driver. The result is a secure and confident driving experience, free from unnecessary steering kickbacks or vibrations, effectively reducing driver fatigue.

Available on the RED SPORT 400 as part of the ProACTIVE package, the Direct Adaptive Steering is complemented by a refined Rack Electronic Power Steering design standard on PURE, LUXE, and SENSORY models.

Every Q50 features a 4-wheel independent suspension, striking a balance between confident handling and a comfortable ride. The front suspension adopts a double-wishbone design, while the rear suspension incorporates a multi-link design with coil springs and Dual Flow Path® shock absorbers (non-SPORT models). Aluminum components are extensively used in the suspension to optimize weight. Front and rear stabilizer bars further contribute to the handling dynamics.

The RED SPORT 400 comes equipped with the Dynamic Digital Suspension, a system that continually adjusts shock absorber valves within a broad range of damping force to control body motion during cornering. Monitoring body roll, pitch, and bounce rate, this system ensures a comfortable, confident, and well-insulated ride in diverse conditions. Bumps and undulating road conditions are effectively absorbed to maintain a flat body posture.

Braking is facilitated by a 4-wheel power-assisted vented disc brake system featuring a 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, and Brake Assist. The RED SPORT 400 boasts Sport Brakes with upgraded rotors, 4-piston front calipers, 2-piston rear calipers, and eye-catching red painted calipers.
